Has anyone had this situation happen to them? I was pitching against the Dodgers... Minor for the Braves against Matt Kemp. Kemp hit a pretty routine deep fly ball to right. I had Diaz in to give Heyward a day off in my franchise and Diaz runs over and instead of catching the ball, the ball hits his glove arm bounces off his shoulder then into his face and then into the stands just foul, but hit Diaz in fair territory. Kemp was awarded a homerun. Obviously we've all seen Canseco take one in the dome and it bounce over the wall for a home run... my question is the ball landed clearly foul? I'm curious what the ruling would be in a real game or if anyone else has had this happen? First time for me and I've been playing the show since 08. I recorded a video, but usually just read posts here and not post so I gotta figure out how to upload the video. Set a weird tone for the game though...

That would have to be a home run right? If it hit a fielder in fair territory then landed foul it would be a fair ball. Just because it landed over the fence wouldn't change anything.

You are 100% correct. A ball that touches a fielder that is standing in fair territory is a fair ball no matter if it lands in foul ground.

It seems like it would be treated like a ball going out of play(since it went into foul territory). The runner advances to the base he is running to plus one. Turning it into a ground rule double technically.

That's exactly what I was thinking. If a ball bounces into fair territory and then over the wall and lands foul, it is a ground rule double.

In '93 Canseco is playing for the Rangers and has what looks like a catch able ball bounce off the top of his head and into the stands for a homerun!! Just like in your case the ball only went over the wall because it was touched by a player in fair territory. The same would hold true if a player attempted to make the same catch in foul territory and it bounced over the wall...it would be ruled "foul ball."

Pretty sure the rule is if the ball touches a player IN FAIR TERRITORY (as a few others have said) then the ball is ruled fair... regardless of where it ends up.
I would LOVE to see that play though! I had a strange one in the Trop last year where the ball went off Manny's glove in LF and over that little cutout of the wall in left field for a HR... |

i believe it should have been a GR double.......
mlb rule 6.09 (h) (h) Any fair fly ball is deflected by the fielder into the stands, or over the fence into foul territory, in which case the batter shall be entitled to advance to second base; but if deflected into the stands or over the fence in fair territory, the batter shall be entitled to a home run. However, should such a fair fly be deflected at a point less than 250 feet from home plate, the batter shall be entitled to two bases only. |
