What is with the Instant Pickoffs?

SDS

So my SS has got speed in the 90s, but his stealing skill isn't as great (in the low 40s). Yet, for some reason, after I hit a single the pitcher finds it appropriate to pick me off for NO reason.

Seriously! No reason! I didn't even lead at all. Just minding my own business and boom, he throws over and my guy just stands there like a dunce. I know how to dive back, don't get me wrong, but the game doesn't give me a millisecond to do so.

This ticks me off primarily because I'll have NO intention of stealing in those instances, and because I get picked off, my skills in stealing and baserunning regress. So what's the deal? Is there something that can help prevent this manure?

I use the stick for running so when I get on 1B the first thing I do is hold the stick down which will makr him automatically go to first on a pick off move without me needing to respond. I very rarely get picked off

SDS

when you are ready to run just move the stick up

Thanks. It seems easier to get picked off this year in RTTS than before!

It's not easier, it's just that they are picking you off when you least expect it. It won't slow down the moment like it usually does. They just pick of real quick and you always have to pay attention or they get you. I learned good locked player running from this mode..in DD my baserunning is worthless...lol

You got that right... I am least expecting it, lol! I remember from previous iterations of RTTS that pitchers would most likely try a pickoff attempt if you took a lead or had tried to steal earlier in the game. Now it's like "lemme try to pick you off just because."

My DD baserunning is far better than my RTTS baserunning. There, my baserunners usually only get tagged out because of some stupid decision on their part (i.e., trying to go home when they're slower than an elderly person with a walker, or believing in their speed too much).

You should never get picked off as long as you are playing correctly

I would not say that exactly. Sometimes the CPU will go into show motion which will freeze your runner while the pitcher makes his move so you do get picked off. Now I will say that does not happen often but it does happen.

bro these kill me.. like my guy is still in the motion of leading off and boom im out

Yeah, that's what happened to me. Even when I did move the stick to get back to 1st base, it didn't give me enough time for that input to register, much less time for me to even react in the first place.

I was paying attention, too! My eye never leaves the pitcher when I'm on base.
