Walter Johnson

SDS

I was thinking about buying Walter johnson . need some feed back on him. BTW before anyone starts the "but his windup" just understand I have no issues with his windup or any slow windup for that matter. Is he worth the buy is all I am asking for?

SDS

I like him, ive used him mostly on all star and he's been effective. The fb is obviously the main weapon, the sinker is flat but if you keep it low it works. The curve is more like a slurve and the changeup is flat too so you have to keep it low or on the edges.. youre either pushing, pulling or using horizontal mvt. So its all on how you locate.

Buy him, try him out, sell for a slight loss or slight profit if you dont like him.

SDS

I haven't pitched with him, but his stuff is flat when I have faced him. 102 doesn't look like Rob Dibble's 102. Curve doesn't have a sharp bite to it either. He's even worse when he's in the stretch.

SDS

Can’t pitch traditionally with him. You have to take advantage of the weird arm slot he comes out of to really maximize his ability. For example, he’s the only pitcher I’m willing to throw changeups high with because they genuinely look like fastballs out of his hand. The sinker is best used low because his arm slot means it doesn’t have the really awkward movement others like Orel have. Fastballs up and away to both sides are godly.

Finally, you have to take him out early if your opponent is on him. He’s not a pitcher who can scrape by in a game; if he’s getting hit hard you have to take him out even in the third inning.

He's just trash

For me, personally, I LOVE Walter Johnson. (Yes, call me insane if you want.) He always pitches well for me, and people always say, "But he only has 4 pitches, and they're super common, so they're easy to hit." Not. The. Case. I have used him in 3 (technically 2 because my opponent quit in the 3rd game in the 4th inning) games, and he has gotten like 40 strikeouts already. He always pitches deep into games for me, and my opponents are either geared up for the fastball, or get blown away by it, so I adjust occasionally, and I throw his changeup or curveball. It almost always works. In his first 2 starts for me, BOTH times, he got over 15 strikeouts. So that's what I think of him.

SDS

small sample size but he is 4-0 for me (all on all star). You do have to mix pitches and locations well because the ball is pretty flat and doesn't move much, but it's been working so far.

SDS

If you're still considering, I'll throw in my feedback. He is my favourite pitcher.

I'm not the best player (hover around 500 in RS), but his K/9 is better than any other pitcher for me - currently at 1.39. There are players that can handle him, but if you face off against someone that can't handle his velocity mixed with the offspeed, you are in total control. I had 14 strikeouts in a game before the guy quit after the 6th inning... so yes, 14 KO's out of 18 batters.

SDS

I can only speak from my experience facing him, and it's a mixed bag that'd led me to not personally pick him up. I'd venture to guess it's all in who's pitching with him. Some times I'll get shut out by him and pray my opponent pinch hits for him in the middle innings so I can get into the bullpen and have better luck. other times I connect with everything he throws.

SDS

He is good when I use him, and I also hit him well when I face him. So it only depends on if his windup will make you throw more pitch down the middle and how versatile your pitching strategy with him to prevent the pitch to be guessed.
