2020 Content: Prospects

SDS

My students are taking a test, so I've got not much to do, so I wanted to reflect on the content this year. I don't know if I'll make more than this post, or keep going after this, but I guess we'll see.

The new Prospects series was a pretty great way to start the season. No OP cards, really, and some were quite fun to use for a time, though admittedly, I played better with most of the golds than the diamonds (Looking at you, Daulton Varsho). I'm torn on how I feel about the Prospect series existing alongside Future Stars, though, considering a lot of the Prospects got FS cards.

I almost feel as if Prospects should exist, or Future Stars should exist, but I have a hard time reconciling the need for both unless they become a sort of 2 tiered series with Future Stars being the reimagined top prospects that are knocking on the door and Prospects being cards that are maybe a couple years off.

Example:
Clarke Schmidt of the Yankees: Future Stars
Jasson Dominguez: Prospect

This would eliminate all the repeats, while also exposing a broader audience to the potential future of players in the game, which is something I always appreciated about the FS cards in the first place.

They could even set up a Prospect/FS program similar to TA with perhaps 4 rewards (this is not well thought out). Start Tier 1 with launch of the game, and open a new tier like every 2 weeks. All the Prospects released during Spring Training, and the Future Stars in the first month of the season.

Tier 1: Silver Prospect
Tier 2: Gold Prospect
Tier 3: Gold Future Star
Tier 4: Diamond Future Star

Maybe even throw a Future Star program during the All Star Break for Futures Game MVPs or something. I dunno.

I enjoyed being able to use the FS cards, and still use a few of them regularly, and even roll out a FS team in RS once in awhile to switch thing up.

Ultimately, I think the Prospects were great for early season cards, and they shouldn't really be endgame cards, so the high 80-low 90s ratings were pretty solid for that early in the cycle. The silver prospect may be pretty much completely unnecessary, so it may be better to go low gold/low diamond for prospects, and high gold/high diamond for FS.

Anyway, just something I was pondering.

I agree with pretty much all of your points here. Well thought out. While it bothers me to see so many 99 FS players rivaling real legends of the game, it has certainly gotten me more interested in other teams' farm systems and I liked playing with the golds and low diamonds early in the year.

I agree that there needs to be a clearer line between Prospect and FS or just eliminate one. Maybe there could be a Prospect/FS program like you suggested, however you would earn a prospect and then have the ability to "prestige" or "evolve" them into their FS card. I think that would make me feel like I earned the juiced stats on those cards. Just a thought.

Nice post Hooligan!

How about ...
using the Prospect cards as the Evolution program next year?

Start the year with all the prospects in play, and then as they get called up during the year, their Evolution program is released?

Play the Evolution program for each card and when you complete it, you earn the Future Star version.

Evolution was definitely a great idea that seems to have gotten slept on.

If I'd have put more thought into it, I probably would say that the evolution route would be the way to go.

I was definitely giving thought to how to better implement evolution into the game as a whole, and swung and missed on using it here since it's the perfect opportunity.

Exactly. It would almost be like a cross over of Diamond Dynasty and RTTS. As someone who got into MLB The Show because of RTTS, I would really enjoy the feeling evolving a young player into a veteran Allstar.

Bravo !!!!! I like your post. More post like this whit a substantial idea, explained and give SDS at least a new way to improve this game. I am so tired to see post of people crying about the hitting mechanics all year long. Really a great work on your post @WiryHooligan22 -- 10/10

Great ideas. I also felt it was kind of lazy and pointless for a player to get both a Prospect and FS card. They were rarely remarkably different enough to warrant.

I thought Evolution was going to be the return of Rookie to Prime, but it kind of fizzled out and went nowhere after the first few weeks, which was odd.
